This Friday, April 25th, is Day of Silence. For those of you who don't know what that means:

WHAT IT IS:
The National Day of Silence happens annually; it brings attention to anti-LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual) name-calling, bullying, harassment, and hate-crimes.
This year’s Day of Silence is dedicated to Lawrence King, a California 8th-grader who was shot and killed in school on February 12th of this year by a fellow classmate because of his sexual orientation and gender expression.

WHAT'S DONE:
The most widely taken-up way of participating is not speaking all day.
Completely silent. All day.

Now, you don't have to do that, of course; you can spread awareness in your own way. You can give out flyers. You can start a paper-chain. You can make art. You can post a journal. Do whatever you want. Thousands and thousands of people's voices, however, will not be heard on Friday.

ANYONE can participate. You DO NOT HAVE TO BE GAY. You can be black, hispanic, muslim, a one-eyed, one-horned, flying purple people-eater, whatever.

This is an excruciatingly important issue. People need to sit up and pay attention. It IS the SAME THING as slavery, segregation, and racism, and just as bad.

I strongly urge people to participate. This needs to be brought to light.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO STAY SILENT:
-It's a big thing to do. You must be prepared for lots of bullying, hard times from your teachers, and the like. If you aren't ready to face possibly getting into lots of trouble, I would not reccomend it.

-Keeping a wipe-board and a marker on your person to write out your messages with is a highly helpful.

-Carrying a sign and a few articles on you is handy; if people ask or are interested in what you're doing, you can explain by giving them a flyer.
